Not every one needs High Sierra, or even some of the earlier versions of Mac OS. So think about what you wish to do with a new version of the OS and then you can better decide what you need. Formerly called OS X, MacOS runs on all Apple computers, and buying an Apple machine is the only legitimate way to. It was less than a year old and worked perfectly. The three major desktop operating systems are Windows, MacOS, and Chrome OS. I also bought the 2008 one from someone who just wanted other features than the laptop he was selling (both on Amazon and eBay). If the cost is too difficult, check out refurbished models of the current year, or ones from a year or two back – all of which will be reduced in price. Unless you absolutely need all that Sierra (what my current computer has) or High Sierra allows you to do, I suggest that you update to the highest version of the Mac OS that your computer can handle. I have a different computer now, because the old one was breaking down, but I believe that I could have gone on very nicely, for my purposes, for quite some time. May I suggest that you also consider just what you wish to do? I updated from Snow Leopard (10.6.8) on my very-late 2008 MacBook to El Capitan, and it did whatever I needed.
